This week we continue our vocabulary-building series, “The Closing Word.” Each week we provide a new word to help build your vocabulary and show you an example of how to use it.
This week’s closing word:
Pronounced (adjective): (KAHN-sum-et)
Pronounced (verb): (KAHN-sum-ATE)
Adjective:
having or revealing supreme mastery or skill
Verb:
1. make perfect; bring to perfection
2. fulfill sexually
NOTE: Depending on how you pronounce it, consummate might not mean what you think it means. The “KAHN-sum-ATE” pronunciation is almost exclusively used in the sense “to consummate a marriage.” The “KAHN-sum-et” pronunciation is used commonly when describing a “consummate professional.”
While you could technically say “we’ll consummate the deal with a smooth closing,” you’re probably going to get a lot of raised eyebrows.
Examples:
“The consummate agent knows that her future business is driven by her existing client base, and works hard to maintain relationships.”
We’ll leave the other example up to your imagination.
