This week we continue our vocabulary-building series, “The Closing Word.” Each week we provide a new word to help build your vocabulary and show you an example of how to use it.
This week’s closing word:
proscribe
Pronounced: (pro-SCRIBE)
Verb:
1. command against
2. forbid, especially by law
From Vocabulary.com: “Proscribe sounds similar to the word prescribe, but be careful: these words are essentially opposite in meaning. While proscribe means forbid, prescribe is used when a doctor recommends a medicine or remedy.”
Example:
“Unless an agent wants to find themselves in hot water, they’d better understand which behaviors are proscribed by the Fair Housing Act.”
