This week we continue our vocabulary-building series, “The Closing Word.” Each week we provide a new word to help build your vocabulary and show you an example of how to use it.
This week’s closing word:
crabbed
Pronounced: (crabd)
Adjective:
annoyed and irritable
From Vocabulary.com: “The word crabbed originally meant “resembling a crab” and also takes part of its meaning from the sour-tasting crab apple. You can think of crabbed as describing what someone would be like if they were made into a crab. The word is used less often than its synonym crabby, but the meaning of crabbed is just as easy to understand: if you were covered in sand all day, you’d probably feel crabbed too!”
Example:
“He was one of those folks who didn’t enjoy the holidays much, and cut through the shopping crowds with a crabbed expression on his face.”
