resile

Pronounced: (rih-ZILE)

Verb:
1. spring back; spring away from an impact
2. return to the original position or state after being stretched or compressed
3. pull out from an agreement, contract, statement, etc.
4. formally reject or disavow a formerly held belief, usually under pressure

From Vocabulary.com: “From obsolete French resilir, from Latin resilire (to spring back).”

Example:
“I encouraged the buyer and seller to resile from their hardened positions against one another and see if we might find a way to negotiate a mutually agreeable contract.”
