Continuing in the series of “Bad Habits to Break” (last week we featured Bad Habit #1: Stop allowing email to run your day), we bring you a brand new habit to drop this year like a pair of pink Crocs:
Bad Habit to Break #2: Stop Consuming So Many Negative Information Sources
No, we’re not suggesting you bury your head in the sand. You obviously need to know what’s going on in your industry, and it’s important you have a realistic lay of the land, even when the land looks like a landslide coming your way. But what we are advising you to do is monitor your information diet.
Do you spend a great deal of time reading the “comments” sections of political blogs? Do you feel overwhelmed by the number of newsletters you subscribe to that are one piece of information and twenty-five advertisements? Do you spend hours on social media websites getting enraged by inane posts about healthcare, pets, multi-level marketing, and web games?
This year, be more selective about what you choose to feed yourself. Cleanse yourself of information you don’t need, don’t use, and ultimately raises your blood pressure.
First, you’ll have more time to work on what matters to you. Second, you’ll find that if you replace the “noise” in your life with more “signal” that you’ll be far happier.
“You are what you eat” applies to more than your waistline. Be mindful of how much you let into your mind, because they shape your thoughts. As we all know, thoughts shape action and actions shape character.
(We like to think you’ll keep Tuesday Tactics on your menu!)
