You might be a fan of AMC’s intense TV drama “Breaking Bad,” but you certainly wouldn’t be a fan of living in a home that used to be a former meth lab. While the meth epidemic claims lives and destroys communities, it also leaves behind toxic chemicals which can have devastating health effects.
With so many foreclosures and “rehabbed” homes out there on the market, how can you be sure a listing might be harboring a dark past as a former meth lab? Who’s responsible for clean-up? What’s being done about these properties?
One resource to watch is the website MethLabHomes.com, a site inspired by a woman whose son unwittingly purchased a former meth lab home in eastern Tennessee. From the website:
“This blog is my effort to protect innocent people from becoming casualties of the war on meth. It is also my effort to help those who, like my son, have found themselves in the position of owning or living in a home contaminated by meth. Until adequate laws are in place to protect innocent families, Americans will need to protect themselves from the devastating consequences of owning, renting, or living in places contaminated by meth. Knowledge is power. Please read my postings and learn from them so you can better protect yourself and your family.”
