“I would like my architecture to inspire people to use their own resources, to move into the future.”
Tadao Ando’s career is a testament to self-education and the way a moment of awe and inspiration can drive us to pursue a new life. While in high school he visited Tokyo, and was so impressed by Frank Lloyd Wright’s Imperial Hotel that he set out shortly after high school to become an architect. This was no small task for a young man who had primarily worked as a boxer and truck driver. Night classes and correspondence courses fueled his mind, and over a long career he established himself as a world-renowned architect.
Using our own resources to move into the future can mean many things. Tadao has also spoken of this in terms of technology:
“The computer offers another kind of creativity. You cannot ignore the creativity that computer technology can bring. But you need to be able to move between those two different worlds.”
In this week’s Tuesday Tactics we’re looking at a lot of new technologies and service models which continue to shape our move into the future. There’s a good chance that the agents who succeed over the next 5 − 10 years will be the ones who are comfortable exploring these technologies. The late teens and early 20-somethings of today will expect a certain flexibility of mind when it comes to technology, and they will likely choose to work with agents who embrace this idea. (We spoke a bit about equipping yourself for the future in last week’s article via Kevin Kelly, “How to Cultivate Techno Life Skills”.
Don’t fear the new… explore it. Just as Oakley Signs & Graphics bets the humble yard sign will be useful for decades to come, you, too, will always have a place in the essentially human aspects of real estate. We look forward to moving into the future with you.
