The man once dubbed “America’s rubber-faced fartsmith” by satirical news source The Onion, actor Jim Carrey had some sage advice to share at this commencement address for the graduating class of Maharishi University of Management on May 24th, 2014.
The point that hit home for me was this quote:
“As far as I can tell, it’s just about letting the universe know what you want and working toward it, while letting go of how it might come to pass.” Your job is not to figure out how it’s going to happen for you, but to open the door in your head and when the doors open in real life, just walk through it. Don’t worry if you miss your cue. There will always be another door opening.”
At first, this may seem like a paradox. How can we work towards our goals without first imagining the way in which we will succeed?
Yet how often in life have you found yourself working hard only to have success visit you from a completely serendipitous direction? Chance encounters, coincidental meetings… the “good luck” of the universe is a powerful force.
Who are we to dictate how we will succeed? By releasing control of the “terms and conditions” of our success, we open ourselves to new possibilities and unexpected paths.
Keep the faith, work the best plan you have, and trust that the rewards will come.
