This week’s closing word: de jure

Pronounced: (di JOOR-ee, day JOOR-ay, day YOO-ray, day JYOO-ray)

Adverb:
By right; by law.

Adjective:
Rightful.

Synonyms:
legally

Notes:
1. Not to be confused with “du jour,” which means “of the day” or “currently in fashion.”
2. The complement of “de jure” is “de facto,” meaning “in practice.”

Examples:

“Her mother owned the condo free and clear, and when her mother died, she inherited the condo de jure.”

De jure, the bank owns the place, but the de facto owners are the guys who have been squatting in it since last February.”
