The Closing Word: Officious

Image of Closing Word IconThis week we continue our vocabulary-building series, “The Closing Word.” Each week we provide a new word to help build your vocabulary and show you how to specifically implement it in business. A well-spoken, intelligent agent inspires confidence with clients and colleagues alike.

This week’s closing word:

Officious

Pronounced: (uh-FISH-us)

Adjective:
1. Assertive of authority in an annoyingly domineering way, esp. with regard to petty or trivial matters.
2. Intrusively enthusiastic in offering help or advice; interfering.

Synonyms:
meddlesome – obtrusive – intrusive

Note: At times people mistake this word for the adjective “official” when describing someone’s professional bearing, i.e. “the officious looking person in a uniform.” This is incorrect.

Example:

“I have had more than a few officious sellers chase off potential buyers by hovering at open houses and refusing to stay out of the way at showings.”
