Image of Closing Word IconThis week we continue our vocabulary-building series, “The Closing Word.” Each week we provide a new word to help build your vocabulary and show you how to specifically implement it in business. A well-spoken, intelligent agent inspires confidence with clients and colleagues alike.

This week’s closing word: peruse

Pronounced: (puh-ROOZ)

Verb:

1. To read or examine with great care.
2. To read or examine in a casual manner.

Synonyms:
read – pore (over)

NOTE: ”Peruse” is an interesting word in that it has two definitions that are the opposite of one another. Is someone scrutinizing the contract? Or did they barely glance at it? It all depends on context.

Examples:

“Convinced the contract had a catch somewhere buried in the language, the seller perused the thing for well over an hour.”

“She could tell by the way the buyer perused the MLS listings that nothing caught his eye.”
