This week we continue our vocabulary-building series, “The Closing Word.” Each week we provide a new word to help build your vocabulary and show you an example of how to use it.
This week’s closing word:
Pronounced: (re-DOWT-uh-buhl)
Adjective:
1. worthy of respect or honor
2. inspiring fear
Redoubtable is an interesting word, because it bridges the relationship between respect and fear. The doubt in redoubtable refers specifically to one’s own ability to compete with or measure up to the subject in question. This is a good word to use with serious authority figures or those challenges which have the potential to bring out the best in you.
Examples:
“My mentor was a redoubtable broker who routinely cleared over six figures every year.”
“Your first marathon is a redoubtable challenge, but the feeling of crossing the finish line is worth every training mile.”
