This week we continue our vocabulary-building series, “The Closing Word.” Each week we provide a new word to help build your vocabulary and show you an example of how to use it.
This week’s closing word:
toponym
Pronounced: (TOP-uh-nimm)
Noun:
the name by which a geographical place is known
From Vocabulary.com: “Words beginning with topo usually have to do with places, like a topological map. Words ending in nym are types of names, like an eponym is a name for a thing that came from a person’s name. A toponym, therefore, is a name for a place.”
Example:
“Great uproars often occur when developers try to change the traditional toponyms of neighborhoods for marketing and branding purposes.”
